I can appreciate that, Beth. Leaving work in the dark is deflating. I'm just not sure what we'd gain from year-round DST would be worth what we'd lose. Maybe, before we decide for real, we all need to spend a month in Arizona, or Hawaii. 😅 Thanks for the comment.
Wonderful writing today... How many times can one say the words agree.. endless for me.. My response to your 3 requested questions.. I do not like daylight savings time... it's crazy... When I was growing up it was stated that it was to give extra daylight for those of us who waited at the bus site for the school bus.... I guess those of us who rode our bikes... ..or walked or rode in a car never benefited by this great time change.... Secondly yes there is another day that's crazy in North Carolina.... Scores of people walk around thinking that Easter Monday is sacred... It has nothing to do with the holy season and in 1935 it began because it commemorated the day the Monday after Easter when Wake Forest University and North Carolina State University played baseball... Talking about crazy... And thirdly... In order to get places on time at my losing memory age ...yes I did move my clock forward with my eyes closed....🤣
I'm sure, after this, I don't have to tell you how I really feel. Ha!
I'd never heard the story of the Easter Monday holiday in NC. What the heck?!
The only clock not yet changed for me is on the dashboard of the car. I can't remember how to do it without dragging out the manual. I'll get there right about the time we're ready to switch it back.
As someone who has to convert time on the regular on the airplane, I often have to have use tricks I've taught myself to figure out AZ time (summer = beach = Pacific, winter = skiing = Mountain) In trying to explain the whole thing to international travelers, I usually shrug and say "farming?" THANK GOD YOU SET ME STRAIGHT, BEGGINS. This is straight up bullshit. This year's hour felt like they stole my will to live...eff you, consumerism!
Extra credit assignment: Have been tolerating my gynecologist's running late, shitty administrative staff and half-listening for years. NOPE. Canceled my appointment yesterday. Got a new one today!
Such a long-running myth, that farmer thing, and as usual the truth is revealed when we follow the money. I have no idea how you manage shifting time zones the way you do, Eileen. Holy cow!
You inspired me to call about an appointment with a new doc today. The one I'd hoped for isn't taking new patients, but an NP in her practice is. I'm giving myself 24 hours to ask around about others before I lock in. I'm long overdue for this change. Thank you!!
I used to try to change my watch to local time every time we landed…how cute is that? Thank gawd for the Apple Watch, it knows things so I don’t have to….
Sorry - but I could not care less about losing morning light (it just means I don't have to be up at 5am to go birding but can more easily synchronise my rising to the birds clocks) but I care very much about having that extra hour in the evening to potter in the garden or go for a walk. I remember an experiment in the UK when I was young that for a few years gave us "double summer time" and it was wonderful.
You'd have got on well with the entomologist and golfer. LOL! I do love a good evening garden session, and wrapping up in time to eat dinner at a decent hour is often a goal I miss. 🤣 Thanks for chiming in, and for the restack!
Daughter in Arizona here - you really don’t notice the “missing” hour in the evening during the summer, except maybe for the third week at the height of June when the days are at their longest. And it sure is delightful to not have to play clock math twice a year too! Congress, get on board!
I had the idea you were blowing a small gasket having to wait till the bitter end for the Arizona acknowledgement. 😅 Thanks for sharing a perspective few have the chance to experience. I (obviously) believe you!
This may be my favorite Chicken Scratch of all...the formatting, the rant in terms that Congress MIGHT actually read (doubtful, sorry...), and these phrases made it for me (and where do you dream this stuff up? Always amazing to me!):
"whims of the two dead dudes"
"dicking around with the clocks"; and
"circadian Ponzi scheme
The last one really had me giggling; in fact, I listened to this Scratch, and I giggled so much one of my work mates asked me what was so funny! I'm on my headset, so all they heard was me giggling and guffawing!
Thanks for a great story this morning, and editorial commenting Daylight Saving Time...
Thanks, Carolyn. If I had 48 hours in my days, I might have to take up actual lobbying on this one. Alas. I love thinking of you laughing into the office void. What a way to light up your co-workers days! Glad you enjoyed this one so much, and especially appreciate you highlighting which lines landed best. 🥰
When you have chronic health issues, DST is hell. Personally, I can't drive well in the dark. I look forward to the light in the evening. However, it's not worth it to me to keep messing with my sleep. Sleep is universal. Everyone needs it!
I am restacking this everywhere! Thank you for writing about this. It made me laugh out loud! Thank you for spreading sunshine, Elizabeth! ☀️💛😂
Oh, Shauna, that's a whole other aspect that could be added to the list. As someone who has never mastered the art of sleeping like a hibernating bear, I could not agree more: Sleep is critical! And so many of us don't get enough. Grateful for the shares, and happy to know this brightened the day a bit.
Hahaha. Reads like something the smartest, saltiest lawyer would have written. (The kind we need, btw.) I hate the time change in November, but love it in the spring. I'm not a morning person, so later light is great for me. All in all, though, it's stupid, and a hassle. I have never experienced major trauma because of it, but the things you list here? Heart attacks, etc? That is reason enough to stop the madness.
I can't claim to experience anything especially negative either, Wendy, but it definitely wonks with me in subtle ways, mostly attitude. Also, I don't like that another money-driven decision got credited to farmers. Like they looked around and thought "That's it! People will forgive the farmers!" Ugh.
Now I'm thinking about acronyms: DSTTrauma? DSTDisorder? DSTSyndrome?
I’ve heard various “reasons.” Strange, how difficult it is to get at the truth of something. It benefitted someone…I just don’t know who. And solidarity—always. Even if we disagree (rarely to never), I’m on your side.
I hear you, Irena. So often it's you generating the laughter, so I'm glad to be able to offer that this week. Be good to yourself, you hear, and thanks for reading and restacking!
Speaking for myself, here in Australia, I absolutely LOVE daylight saving. Walking in the long golden evenings with the dog, sometimes swimming after dinner. Perfection. And as farmers, it makes no difference to us or our stock. They live, they feed. All okay. Our worries are more to do with fuel costs...
My two kids, now adults, would settle so quickly into summer DST routine that it was unremarkable. Mainly because they were so tired from having fun in the summer that they crashed onto the bed and knew nothing till morning. My grandson is the same.
We change back to Eastern Australian Time on the first week in April and it will be as if someone has switched the light off. But then we have vast tranches of night sky to gaze at and wonder at. The only downside is how looooooong a winter night can be.
You know, Prue, with the intensity of your heat, I imagine those evening walks in the summertime are pretty extraordinary. Since I'm not a natural early riser, I struggle with dark mornings, but we're all wired differently--thank goodness! I can only imagine what glory the Tasmanian night skies must reveal. Wow!
"Want an extra hour of light after dinner? Have your dinner earlier" is kind of where my mind goes.
I change all my clocks the morning of. Bedside alarm has a DST button I press twice a year. The too-high kitchen clock I reach with a wooden spoon to scoot the hour hand here or there.
Favorite phrase: "nothing says representative democracy like restructuring human biology so that somebody can sell more lawn furniture."
It's about selling more stuff. Whatever "it" is, It's always about selling more stuff.
I do at least know *how* to change my car's clock, but I haven't been back in it since looking it up. And now it's snowing again, so I guess I'll wait another day.
Thanks for enjoying a little levity with me, Stew. Aren't wooden spoons the most versatile tools ever?
Can we send you to Congress? For real. You've got my vote. You're funny, you're smart, you're sensible, and you can write (and I'm going to assume speak) in coherent sentences. Which makes you more qualified than almost everyone else there.
I appreciate your question about things I'm putting up with that I could shift, but there are so damn many that it might take me a bit to get back to you on this. Also, I'm having a big ol' whopping migraine this week, probably because of the effing time change.
Hahaha....no! My head would absolutely fly all the way off in a session of Congress. That or I'd need to take off someone else's. But I appreciate your enthusiasm and look forward to a time when we can once again feel confident in the work of our elected officials. It turns out, hope may not spring eternal, which is why I've got a death grip on it right now.
I'm so sorry about the migraine, Rita. Ugh. I hope by the time you read this it has improved. And I am certain you are already making tectonic shifts right now. You get a pass! Hugs and thanks.
I read the science and understand, but I just love the light in the evening. I want DST all year.

Brilliant.
And “High Noon” the movie and the concept and the sundial makes no sense unless we stick to Standard Time.
Amen.
Ooh, more WHEREAS fodder! Thanks, Mermaid. Have you ever seen the Stonehenge clock change cartoon? Cracks me up!
I hadn’t. Now I can’t unsee it. My kinda humor. Thanks.
Love your focus!!
Thanks, Jill. Maybe I can laser focus my way into the minds of our elected officials?

I'd say, "Can I get a hallelujah?!" but I'll hold off on that until we have something to cheer about. Fingers crossed. Thanks, Roe.

Thank you for making me laugh. I have been completely dysfunctional since Sunday and laughing helps.

Thanks so much for the lovely comment.
I need to wear a button this week warning others of my sleep deprived "surliness".
Hahah! We all need a collection of these, one for every potentially frightening mood! Hang in there, Susan. I feel ya'!
